BIYU and Refurbr partner to bring subscription to refurbished tech

Refurbishers can offer devices on subscription, and rental businesses can send consumer electronics through a dedicated refurbishment flow, without changing the systems they already run.

What this changes

A refurbished device can earn more than once.

Most refurbishers take in used phones, laptops and tablets, test, grade and refurbish them, then sell them. The device leaves, and that sale is the end of it.

With BIYU and Refurbr, that same device can go out on subscription, come back, be retested and go out again, or be bought by the subscriber who wants to keep it. One device, several customers, recurring revenue.

Refurbr is the operating platform refurbishers use to run their whole operation, from buyback, testing and repair to stock, sales channels and fulfilment. BIYU adds the subscription offer on the storefront they already run, so the shopper stays on that site.

Two ways in

What each side can do now

For refurbishers

Add subscription on the storefront you already run

Once a device is graded in Refurbr, BIYU publishes it for sale or on subscription, each with its own terms. Subscription management and payments run with Firmhouse, our partner for that part of the checkout. A case or a screen protector can be bought in the same checkout. If a subscriber wants to keep the device, they can buy it out.

For rental and subscription businesses

Refurbishment, handled end to end

If you already run consumer electronics on BIYU, devices that come back are received, tested, inspected, repaired and graded in Refurbr. Repair and parts cost land on that device, tracked by IMEI or serial number.

The arithmetic

The device stays the same. The number of times it earns changes.

Sold once

1Done

The device is sold once. One margin, then it leaves the business.

On subscription

1First subscriber
2Refreshed
3Next subscriber

A monthly amount across more than one customer, and the device is still worth something when it comes back. Or the subscriber buys it out and keeps it.

That holds together because Refurbr keeps the repair and parts cost on each device, and BIYU keeps the record of what it has earned and what it is worth now.

How it works

From the workbench to a subscriber, and back

The device stays known to both systems the whole way. Nothing is rekeyed.

  1. 1

    Refurbished in Refurbr

Grade and availability are known before the device is offered.

  2. 2

    Published by BIYU

The device goes live on the customer’s own storefront, for sale or on subscription.

  3. 3

    A shopper subscribes

Accessories can be bought in the same checkout.

  4. 4

    Refurbr fulfils the order

Picking, packing and shipping stay in the system the team already uses.

  5. 5

    The subscription starts on delivery

Once the device arrives, the subscription begins.

  6. 6

    The shopper ends it

Closing the subscription triggers the return in Refurbr.

  7. 7

    The device comes back

Refurbr receives it, and the subscription stops.

The record

One device. One history, kept as you work.

Repair and parts history stay on the IMEI in Refurbr. What the device earned, and what it is worth today, stay in BIYU. Together that is a continuous record from first refurbishment through each subscriber to the end of its life.

European product rules are moving toward traceability of the individual item, including the Digital Product Passport. A business that already holds this record will not have to assemble one later.

“The circular economy is about keeping devices in use for as long as possible. Until now, most refurbishers have had one option: sell a device and see it leave for good. Now our customers can choose. They can sell it to an end user, or offer it on subscription so that when it comes back, it’s retested, data-wiped and sent out again to someone else, with full traceability of its journey every step of the way. That’s a big step towards a truly circular business, and we’re really pleased to be doing it with BIYU.”

Ryan Aston·Co-Founder and Managing Director, Refurbr

“Refurbishment and subscription have always been two halves of the same business, run on two different systems. Connecting them means a device can go out, come back, be made good and go out again, with the record following it the whole way.”
